Description
Overview of the medicine
Fexona 180 mg tablet contains Fexofenadine, a non-drowsy antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives). It works by blocking histamine H1 receptors, reducing allergic reactions like sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes/nose/throat, and skin rash.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis: 180 mg once daily. Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria: 180 mg once daily.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment generally required, but caution is advised.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment may be considered (e.g., 60 mg once daily for moderate to severe renal impairment). Consult a physician.
How to Take
Fexona 180 mg tablet should be taken orally with water, preferably before a meal. Do not take with fruit juice as it may reduce absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It binds to histamine H1 receptors without crossing the blood-brain barrier significantly, thereby blocking the action of histamine, which is responsible for allergic symptoms, with minimal central nervous system effects (e.g., drowsiness).
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in feces (80%) and urine (10%)
Half life
11-15 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached in 1-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized (approximately 5% hepatic metabolism)
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to fexofenadine or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin or Ketoconazole
May increase fexofenadine plasma concentrations. Clinical significance is usually minimal but caution is advised.
Antacids containing aluminum and magnesium
May reduce the absorption of fexofenadine. Separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include drowsiness, dizziness, and dry mouth. Management is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage and observation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown if fexofenadine is excreted in human milk; use with caution in nursing mothers. Consult a doctor.
