For oral use. Shake the bottle well before each use. Measure the dose using the provided measuring device (spoon or syringe). Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It works by blocking histamine, a natural substance the body produces during an allergic reaction, thereby reducing allergy symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged, mainly via feces (80%) and urine (10%).
Half life
Approximately 11-15 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration; peak plasma concentration reached in approximately 1-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; approximately 5% hepatic metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to fexofenadine or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin and Ketoconazole
May increase plasma concentrations of fexofenadine; monitor for increased side effects.
Fruit juices (grapefruit, orange, apple)
May reduce bioavailability of fexofenadine; avoid taking fexofenadine with these juices.
Antacids (containing aluminum or magnesium)
May reduce the absorption of fexofenadine; administer at least 2 hours apart.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth. Management is symptomatic and supportive; there is no specific antidote. Hemodialysis does not effectively remove fexofenadine from blood.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Fexofenadine is excreted into breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
