Description
Overview of the medicine
Fexofenadine is a non-sedating antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and hives.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
120 mg once daily, or 60 mg twice daily if preferred for some conditions.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is usually required, but caution is advised in elderly patients with impaired renal function.
Renal_impairment
Initial dose of 60 mg once daily is recommended for patients with impaired renal function.
How to Take
Take orally with water, with or without food. Do not take with fruit juice.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It blocks the action of histamine, a natural substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms.

Onset
Approximately 1 hour
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in feces (approx. 80%) and urine (approx. 10%).
Half life
Approximately 14-16 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, reaching peak plasma concentrations in 1-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized in the liver; approximately 5% undergoes hepatic metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to fexofenadine or any excipients.
- •Children under 6 years for 120mg/180mg tablets.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin/Ketoconazole
Can increase plasma levels of fexofenadine, but generally without increased adverse effects.
Antacids (containing aluminum and magnesium)
May reduce the absorption of fexofenadine. Take antacids at least 2 hours apart from fexofenadine.
Storage
Store below 30°C, in a dry place, away from direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include drowsiness, dizziness, and dry mouth. Management is supportive and symptomatic; gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered soon after ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy category C. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and the benefit outweighs the risk. Fexofenadine is excreted into breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
