Fluconazole is an antifungal medication used to treat various fungal infections. It belongs to the triazole group of antifungals.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Vaginal Candidiasis: 150 mg single dose. Oropharyngeal Candidiasis: 50-100 mg daily for 7-14 days. Systemic Candidiasis: 400 mg on day 1, then 200-400 mg daily.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary for renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage must be adjusted based on creatinine clearance.
How to Take
Can be taken with or without food. Swallow the capsule whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits fungal cytochrome P450-dependent 14-alpha-demethylase, which is essential for ergosterol synthesis. This leads to increased cellular permeability and inhibition of fungal growth.

Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to fluconazole or other azole antifungals.
- Concomitant use with terfenadine, astemizole, cisapride, pimozide, quinidine, or erythromycin.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Increased prothrombin time; monitor INR.
Phenytoin
Increased phenytoin levels; monitor levels.
Rifampicin
Decreased fluconazole levels.
Oral Hypoglycemics
Prolonged half-life, monitor blood glucose.
Hydrochlorothiazide
Increased fluconazole levels.

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Gastric lavage may be appropriate. Symptomatic and supportive measures, with forced diuresis, may be employed. Hemodialysis significantly decreases plasma levels.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Category C (single dose for vaginal candidiasis is category B); high doses or prolonged use should be avoided unless potential benefits outweigh risks. Lactation: Fluconazole is excreted in breast milk; use with caution.
