Description
Overview of the medicine
Flugal 50 mg Suspension is an antifungal medication used to treat various fungal infections including candidiasis of the mouth, throat, esophagus, and vagina. It works by stopping the growth of fungi.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For oral candidiasis: 50 mg once daily for 7-14 days. For severe or refractory cases, dosage and duration may be adjusted by a physician.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients with normal renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage should be reduced by 50% for patients with creatinine clearance <50 mL/min.
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before each use. Measure the prescribed dose using the provided measuring spoon or cup. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Flugal inhibits the fungal enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase, which is responsible for the conversion of lanosterol to ergosterol. Ergosterol is an essential component of the fungal cell membrane; its inhibition leads to increased cell membrane permeability, leakage of cellular contents, and fungal cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Antifungal effects typically observed within 24-48 hours of treatment initiation.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in the urine (approximately 80% of dose).
Half life
Approximately 30 hours, allowing for once-daily dosing.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, with oral bioavailability >90%. Peak plasma concentrations achieved within 1-2 hours after administration.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; primarily unchanged drug excreted.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Flugal or other azole antifungals
- Co-administration with terfenadine, astemizole, cisapride, pimozide, or quinidine in patients receiving multiple doses of Flugal
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase the anticoagulant effect, leading to an increased risk of bleeding. Monitor INR closely.
Phenytoin
May increase phenytoin serum levels, requiring dose adjustment. Monitor phenytoin levels.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C), protected from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive measures should be employed, including gastric lavage if appropriate. Hemodialysis may decrease plasma concentrations.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
