Description
Overview of the medicine
Fluking 125 mg Suspension is an anthelmintic medication used to treat a variety of worm infections in the intestines, such as roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and pinworms. It works by preventing the worms from absorbing sugar, which depletes their energy and eventually kills them.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For most intestinal worm infections: 125 mg (5 ml) twice daily for 3 days. For pinworm: A single dose of 125 mg (5 ml). Repeat after 2-4 weeks if necessary.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required based on age, same as adult dose.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment necessary as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
Shake the suspension well before use. It can be taken with or without food. For young children, it can be mixed with food or liquids.
Mechanism of Action
Flubendazole selectively binds to tubulin, a structural protein of microtubules, in the intestinal cells of parasitic worms. This binding inhibits microtubule polymerization, leading to the disruption of the worms' glucose uptake and energy metabolism, eventually causing paralysis and death of the worm.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Anthelmintic effects are observed within a few days of treatment completion.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in the feces. A small portion of metabolites is excreted in urine.
Half life
Approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours (systemically absorbed fraction).
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (less than 10% bioavailability). Absorption may be slightly increased with fatty meals.
Metabolism
Undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Flubendazole or any component of the formulation
- Pregnancy (relative contraindication, consult physician)
Drug Interactions
Ritonavir
May alter Flubendazole levels.
Cimetidine
May inhibit the metabolism of Flubendazole, potentially leading to increased plasma concentrations (though systemic absorption is low).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastrointestinal symptoms like abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may occur. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage may be considered if ingestion is recent.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown if Flubendazole is excreted in human milk; use with caution during breastfeeding. Consult a doctor.
