Description
Overview of the medicine
Flustaph 125 mg Suspension is an antibiotic from the penicillin group, primarily used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus species. It is effective against various bacterial infections including skin, soft tissue, bone, and respiratory tract infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically prescribed as 125mg suspension for adults, who usually take 250-500mg capsules/tablets. For children, the typical dose is 125-250mg every 6 hours, or as directed by a physician based on weight and age.
Elderly
Elderly patients generally receive adult doses, but renal function should be monitored. Dosage adjustment may be necessary in severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
In severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 10 ml/min), the dosage interval may be increased, or dose reduced. Consult a physician for specific guidance.
How to Take
Oral. Shake the bottle well before each use. Take 30-60 minutes before meals for optimal absorption. Use the measuring spoon/cup provided.
Mechanism of Action
Flucloxacillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). This disrupts the peptidoglycan layer formation, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death. It is resistant to degradation by staphylococcal beta-lactamases (penicillinase).
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset, typically within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in the urine, with a small proportion excreted in bile.
Half life
Approximately 0.5-1 hour in individuals with normal renal function.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, though food may reduce absorption. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 1 hour after oral administration.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to penicillin antibiotics or any component of the formulation.
- •History of flucloxacillin-associated jaundice/hepatic dysfunction.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. Close monitoring of INR is recommended.
Probenecid
Increases and prolongs plasma levels of flucloxacillin.
Methotrexate
Increased methotrexate toxicity due to reduced renal excretion.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives; use alternative contraception.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct light. Keep out of reach of children. Once reconstituted, store in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard after 7-14 days (check specific product leaflet).
Overdose
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and electrolyte imbalance. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic. Hemodialysis is generally not effective.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Flucloxacillin is excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult a doctor.
