Description
Overview of the medicine
Flustaph 500 mg Capsule is an antibiotic belonging to the penicillin group. It is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, particularly those caused by penicillinase-producing staphylococci.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250-500 mg every 6 hours, usually taken 30-60 minutes before meals. For severe infections, the dose may be increased.
Elderly
No specific dose reduction is required unless there is significant renal impairment. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance <10 ml/min, the dose may need to be reduced or the dosing interval extended. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Take the capsule orally with water, preferably on an empty stomach (e.g., 30-60 minutes before meals or 2 hours after meals) for optimal absorption. Do not crush or chew the capsule.
Mechanism of Action
Flustaph acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, thereby preventing the cross-linking of peptidoglycan polymers, which are essential components of the bacterial cell wall. This leads to cell lysis and bacterial death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. A small amount is excreted in bile.
Half life
Approximately 0.5 to 1.5 hours in individuals with normal renal function.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, though absorption is reduced by food. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 1-2 hours after oral administration.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to penicillin or any other beta-lactam antibiotics.
- •History of flucloxacillin-associated cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. Close monitoring of INR is recommended.
Methotrexate
May increase methotrexate toxicity by reducing its renal excretion.
Other antibiotics (e.g., Tetracyclines, Chloramphenicol)
Bacteriostatic antibiotics may interfere with the bactericidal action of penicillins. Avoid concomitant use.
Storage
Store in a cool and dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include gastrointestinal disturbances like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Management is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage if ingested recently.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Flustaph can be used during pregnancy if clearly indicated, as there is no evidence of teratogenicity. Lactation: It is excreted in small amounts in breast milk, but generally considered compatible with breastfeeding. Consult your doctor before use.
