Overview of the medicine
Flxzen 250 mg Capsule contains Flexoxacin, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250 mg once daily for 7-14 days, depending on the type and severity of infection. Dosage may be increased to 500 mg once daily for severe infections.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is usually required for elderly patients with normal renal function. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance < 50 mL/min, initial dose 250 mg, then 250 mg every 24-48 hours, or as directed by physician.
How to Take
Take the capsule orally with or without food. Swallow whole with water, do not crush or chew. Do not take with dairy products or antacids containing magnesium/aluminum.
Mechanism of Action
Flexoxacin exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours of oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys, with some fecal excretion.
Half life
Approximately 8-12 hours, allowing for once or twice daily dosing.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized in the liver (less than 10%), primarily excreted as unchanged drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Flexoxacin or other fluoroquinolones.
- •History of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolone use.
- •Children and adolescents below 18 years of age.
- •Pregnancy and lactation.
Drug Interactions
NSAIDs
Concomitant use may increase the risk of CNS stimulation and convulsions.
Warfarin
May enhance anticoagulant effects, increasing risk of bleeding. Monitor INR.
Theophylline
Increased plasma levels of Theophylline, leading to toxicity. Monitor Theophylline levels.
Antacids (Magnesium/Aluminum)
Reduced absorption of Flexoxacin. Administer Flxzen at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after antacids.
Dairy products/Iron/Zinc supplements
Reduced absorption due to chelation. Separate administration by several hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Management includes symptomatic and supportive measures. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered. Hemodialysis is not effective.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy due to potential risks to fetal cartilage development. Avoid during lactation as Flexoxacin is excreted in breast milk and may harm the infant. Consult a physician.
