Description
Overview of the medicine
Flxzen 500 mg Capsule is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250 mg to 500 mg every 6 to 12 hours, depending on the severity and type of infection. Maximum daily dose is typically 4 g.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is usually required unless there is significant renal impairment. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction may be necessary. For creatinine clearance <30 mL/min, the dose should be reduced or the dosing interval extended.
How to Take
Take the capsule orally with a glass of water, with or without food. It is important to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by the doctor, even if symptoms improve.
Mechanism of Action
Flxzen exerts its bactericidal action by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to the disruption of cell wall integrity and ultimately bacterial cell lysis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects may be observed within 24-48 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1.5 - 2 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; peak plasma concentrations reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Minimal hepatic metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to Flxzen, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin (e.g., anaphylaxis).
Drug Interactions
Metformin
Potential for increased Metformin levels when co-administered with some cephalosporins; monitor for lactic acidosis.
Probenecid
May decrease the renal excretion of Flxzen, leading to increased plasma concentrations and prolonged half-life.
Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May enhance the anticoagulant effect; monitor INR/PT closely.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, diarrhea, and hematuria. In severe cases, neurotoxic reactions such as seizures may occur. Management involves supportive care, including maintaining airway, breathing, and circulation. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered. Hemodialysis may be helpful in removing the drug from the blood.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown evidence of harm, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Flxzen is excreted in breast milk in low concentrations; use with caution in nursing mothers.
