Description
Overview of the medicine
G-Fix 100 mg Suspension is an oral third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically for pediatric use. For children, the recommended dosage is 8 mg/kg/day orally, either as a single daily dose or in two divided doses for 7-14 days. For adults (if using suspension, not common): 200-400 mg once daily or in two divided doses (e.g., 10-20 ml of 100mg/5ml suspension).
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required for elderly patients with normal renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required. For CrCl 21-60 mL/min, 75% of standard dose. For CrCl < 20 mL/min, 50% of standard dose.
How to Take
Administer orally with or without food. Shake the suspension well before each use. Use a measuring spoon or oral syringe for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, which prevents the cross-linking of peptidoglycan, essential for bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity. This leads to the lysis and death of susceptible bacteria.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Not specified, but antibacterial effect usually within hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in urine (about 50-60% of absorbed dose) and also some biliary excretion.
Half life
Approximately 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food slightly delays absorption but does not significantly affect the extent.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized. A small fraction may be metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefixime or other cephalosporins
- History of anaphylaxis to penicillin
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase prothrombin time (PT) and INR, increasing risk of bleeding.
Carbamazepine
Increased carbamazepine levels have been reported with concomitant cefixime use.
Oral contraceptives
May reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives (use additional barrier method).
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Store reconstituted suspension at room temperature (15-30°C) for up to 7 days or refrigerate (2-8°C) for up to 14 days. Do not freeze.
