Description
Overview of the medicine
g-Salbutamol 5 mg Respirator Solution is a bronchodilator used to relieve symptoms of asthma and COPD, such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
2.5 mg or 5 mg, administered by nebulizer 3-4 times daily as needed. Can be diluted with normal saline.
Elderly
Same as adult dose, but caution is advised in patients with cardiovascular disease or other comorbidities.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is usually required, but monitor for increased side effects with severe impairment.
How to Take
For inhalation use only, via a suitable nebulizer. Do not inject or swallow. Dilute with normal saline if required, as per medical advice.
Mechanism of Action
g-Salbutamol is a selective beta-2 adrenergic agonist. It acts on beta-2 receptors in the smooth muscle of the airways, causing relaxation of the muscles and bronchodilation. This opens the airways, making breathing easier.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
5-15 minutes (inhalation)
Excretion
Excreted primarily in the urine, both as unchanged drug and metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 4-6 hours (systemic)
Absorption
After oral inhalation, a significant portion of the dose is deposited in the airways and absorbed into the systemic circulation. Some is swallowed and absorbed from the GI tract.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to an inactive sulfate conjugate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any component of the formulation
- Not for use in preterm labour or threatened abortion (unless specific indications related to uterine relaxation, which is a rare off-label use for acute situations)
Drug Interactions
Beta-blockers
May antagonize the effects of g-salbutamol and cause severe bronchospasm.
Diuretics (non-potassium-sparing)
Increased risk of hypokalemia, especially with high doses.
Tricyclic antidepressants and MAO inhibitors
Increased risk of cardiovascular side effects due to potentiated effects on the vascular system.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include tachycardia, tremors, palpitations, hyperglycemia, and hypokalemia. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; consider cardioselective beta-blockers with extreme caution.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use in pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus (Category C). Small amounts may be excreted in breast milk; use with caution during lactation.
