Description
Overview of the medicine
Geflox 200 mg Injection is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic containing Ciprofloxacin. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in adults, including complicated urinary tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and intra-abdominal infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Dosage varies significantly based on the type and severity of infection. For adults, typical doses range from 200 mg to 400 mg IV every 8 to 12 hours, infused over 60 minutes.
Elderly
Dosage adjustments are necessary based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction or extended dosing interval is required based on creatinine clearance (e.g., lower dose for CrCl < 30 mL/min).
How to Take
This medicine is administered slowly by intravenous infusion, typically over 60 minutes, by a healthcare professional.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to disruption of bacterial growth and cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid (within 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on infection type).
Excretion
Primarily renal excretion (60-70% as unchanged drug) and some non-renal clearance.
Half life
Approximately 3-5 hours.
Absorption
Rapid and complete absorption after intravenous administration (100% bioavailability).
Metabolism
Minor hepatic metabolism, forming some active metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolone antibiotics
- Concomitant administration with Tizanidine
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effects, increasing the risk of bleeding.
Tizanidine
Concomitant use is contraindicated due to increased plasma concentrations of tizanidine, leading to hypotension and sedation.
Cyclosporine
May increase cyclosporine serum levels, requiring monitoring of renal function.
Theophylline
May increase theophylline plasma concentrations and risk of toxicity.
Corticosteroids
Increased risk of tendinopathy and tendon rupture when co-administered.
Storage
Store below 25°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze.
Overdose
In case of overdose, provide symptomatic and supportive treatment. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis are not very effective in removing ciprofloxacin from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy unless the potential benefit outweighs the risk. Ciprofloxacin is excreted in breast milk; therefore, caution should be exercised or an alternative should be considered during lactation.
