Description
Overview of the medicine
Geflox 250 mg Suspension contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It is used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically used for adults in suspension form; adults usually take 200-400 mg daily as tablets/capsules.
Children
For children 6 months to 12 years: 8 mg/kg/day administered as a single dose or in two divided doses for 5 to 10 days, depending on the infection. Max dose 400 mg/day.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment required for creatinine clearance < 30 ml/min; reduce dose by 50%.
How to Take
Oral administration. Shake the suspension well before each use. Can be taken with or without food. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by the doctor.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, thereby inhibiting the third and final stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. This leads to cell lysis and bacterial death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations reached within 2-6 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted by the kidneys (glomerular filtration and tubular secretion) and also via biliary/fecal route.
Half life
Average plasma half-life is 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food slightly delays absorption but does not significantly affect the extent.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized; about 10% of orally administered dose is excreted as unchanged drug in urine.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Cefixime or other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of hypersensitivity to penicillin (due to potential cross-reactivity).
Drug Interactions
Nifedipine
May increase Cefixime plasma levels.
Probenecid
May increase Cefixime plasma levels by decreasing renal excretion.
Carbamazepine
Concomitant use may increase carbamazepine plasma concentrations.
Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May increase prothrombin time; monitor INR closely.
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Reconstituted suspension should be stored in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discarded after 7-14 days.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Treatment should be supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation.
