Description
Overview of the medicine
Imigra 5 mg Tablet contains Sumatriptan, a selective serotonin 5-HT1B/1D receptor agonist, used for the acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura, and cluster headaches. It helps to relieve migraine symptoms like headache, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One 5 mg tablet taken at the first sign of a migraine attack. If symptoms recur, a second 5 mg tablet may be taken after at least 2 hours, not exceeding a total of 10 mg (two 5 mg tablets) in any 24-hour period. For this specific 5 mg formulation, adhere to physician's advice.
Elderly
Not generally recommended for patients over 65 years of age due to increased risk of cardiovascular events, unless benefits outweigh risks and under strict medical supervision. If used, lowest effective dose should be considered.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required for patients with mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Take the tablet whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or split the tablet. It can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Sumatriptan acts as a selective agonist for 5-HT1B/1D receptors, primarily located on cranial blood vessels and nerve terminals. It causes vasoconstriction of cranial blood vessels, which are dilated during a migraine attack, and inhibits the release of pro-inflammatory neuropeptides from trigeminal nerve endings, thereby alleviating migraine symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically within 30-60 minutes after oral administration.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine as the inactive metabolite and unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 2 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration; bioavailability is about 15% due to first-pass metabolism.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized by monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) to an inactive indole acetic acid analogue.
