Description
Overview of the medicine
Infanil 250 mg Tablet contains Ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and lower fever. It is commonly used for conditions like headaches, menstrual cramps, arthritis, and muscular pain.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
200-400 mg every 4-6 hours as needed. Max 1200 mg/day (for OTC use) or up to 3200 mg/day (under medical supervision for specific conditions). For 250mg, typically 250mg 3-4 times daily.
Elderly
Use lowest effective dose, monitor for adverse effects, especially renal.
Renal_impairment
Reduce dose and monitor renal function; avoid in severe impairment.
How to Take
Take orally with food, milk, or an antacid to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Swallow whole with a glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Ibuprofen works by inhibiting the activity of cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, which are involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are compounds that cause pain, fever, and inflammation. By reducing prostaglandin production, Ibuprofen helps alleviate these symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Pain relief within 30 minutes, anti-inflammatory effects may take longer.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine as metabolites and their conjugates, with a small amount excreted unchanged.
Half life
Approximately 1.8 to 2.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the GI tract; peak plasma concentrations reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by oxidation and conjugation.
