Description
Overview of the medicine

Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not applicable for this pediatric formulation; adult dosage forms are different.
Elderly
Not applicable for this pediatric formulation; elderly dosage forms are different.
Renal_impairment
For children with creatinine clearance less than 60 mL/min, dosage adjustment is required. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Administer orally with or without food. Use a measuring spoon or dropper provided for accurate dosing. Shake the suspension well before each use.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall. This binding prevents the cross-linking of peptidoglycan units, which are essential for the integrity and rigidity of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentration reached in 2-6 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine (about 50%) via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. Some excretion in bile/faeces.
Half life
About 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food slightly delays absorption but does not affect the extent.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized; about 10% appears to be metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to cefixime, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin (e.g., anaphylaxis).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Increased prothrombin time (PT) and INR, leading to increased bleeding risk.
Carbamazepine
Increased plasma carbamazepine levels.
Oral Contraceptives

Storage
Store dry powder at controlled room temperature, protected from light and moisture. After reconstitution, store in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard unused portion after 7-14 days (check specific product label). Do not freeze.
Overdose
Gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended.
Pregnancy & Lactation
