Intracef 125 mg Suspension is an oral antibiotic belonging to the third-generation cephalosporin class. It contains Cefixime as the active ingredient and is primarily used to treat various bacterial infections in children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically used for adults at this strength; adult dosage is usually 200-400 mg once or twice daily.
Elderly
Not typically used for elderly at this strength; dosage adjustments may be needed based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction is recommended for patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 20 mL/min).
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before each use. Administer orally with or without food. Use a calibrated measuring spoon or cup provided with the medication.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, thereby inhibiting the third and final stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. This leads to bacterial cell lysis and death.

Peak plasma concentrations reached within 2-6 hours.
Excretion
Excreted predominantly in urine (about 50%) and bile.
Half life
Average plasma half-life is 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% absorbed orally; absorption is not significantly altered by food.

Minimal metabolism; primarily eliminated as unchanged drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications

Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increased cefixime plasma levels and half-life.
Carbamazepine
Increased carbamazepine levels.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
Increased prothrombin time (PT) with or without bleeding.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep the reconstituted suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and do not freeze.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Cefixime can be used during pregnancy if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation.
