Description
Overview of the medicine
Lizorex 100 mg Suspension contains Linezolid, an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, especially those caused by Gram-positive bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics, such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE). It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
600 mg (30 ml of 100 mg/5 ml suspension) every 12 hours for 10-14 days for most indications.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required for mild to moderate renal impairment; hemodialysis patients should receive dose after dialysis.
How to Take
Shake the suspension well before each use. Can be taken with or without food. Use an accurate measuring device provided with the medicine to ensure correct dosage.
Mechanism of Action
Linezolid inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 23S ribosomal RNA of the 50S ribosomal subunit, preventing the formation of the 70S initiation complex, which is essential for bacterial translation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations reached within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Approximately 65% of the dose is excreted renally (30% as unchanged drug, 35% as metabolites) and non-renally.
Half life
Approximately 4.5 to 5.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapid and extensive oral absorption with ~100% bioavailability.
Metabolism
Primarily by non-enzymatic oxidation to two inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Linezolid or any component of the formulation
- Concurrent use with MAO inhibitors (e.g., phenelzine, isocarboxazid) or within two weeks of discontinuing them
Drug Interactions
MAO Inhibitors
Increased risk of hypertensive reactions or serotonin syndrome.
Serotonergic drugs (SSRIs, SNRIs)
Increased risk of serotonin syndrome.
Adrenergic agents (e.g., pseudoephedrine, dopamine)
May enhance pressor effect.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
In case of overdose, seek emergency medical attention. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive, including maintaining vital signs and monitoring for adverse effects. Hemodialysis may remove some Linezolid, but peritoneal dialysis has not been studied.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus. Excreted in breast milk, so caution is advised; decision to discontinue breastfeeding or the drug should consider the importance of the drug to the mother.
