Description
Overview of the medicine
Lizorex 600 mg Tablet contains Linezolid, an oxazolidinone antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including those caused by Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE). It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
600 mg orally every 12 hours for 10-14 days for most indications. Duration may vary based on infection type and severity.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment generally required based on age alone. Monitor for adverse effects.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required for mild to severe renal impairment or in patients undergoing hemodialysis or CAPD.
How to Take
Lizorex 600 mg Tablet can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break it.
Mechanism of Action
Linezolid is a synthetic antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 23S ribosomal RNA of the 50S ribosomal subunit. This prevents the formation of the 70S initiation complex, which is an essential step in bacterial protein synthesis, thereby stopping bacterial growth.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects typically seen within 24-48 hours, depending on infection severity.
Excretion
Approximately 30% excreted as unchanged drug in urine, with metabolites primarily excreted via urine and feces.
Half life
Approximately 4-5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and extensively absorbed after oral administration, with ~100% bioavailability. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized by non-enzymatic oxidation to two inactive carboxylic acid metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to linezolid or any component of the formulation
- Concomitant use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within two weeks of MAOI use (due to risk of serotonin syndrome)
Drug Interactions
Tyramine-rich foods
Potential for hypertensive crisis. Avoid large amounts.
Pseudoephedrine, ephedrine
Potential for increased blood pressure. Use with caution.
SSRIs (e.g., fluoxetine, sertraline)
Increased risk of serotonin syndrome. Closely monitor patients.
SNRIs (e.g., venlafaxine, duloxetine)
Increased risk of serotonin syndrome. Closely monitor patients.
MAOIs (e.g., phenelzine, tranylcypromine)
Severe risk of serotonin syndrome.
Tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline)
Potential for increased pressor response. Use with caution.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
No specific antidote for linezolid overdose. Treatment should be supportive and symptomatic. Hemodialysis may remove some linezolid, but peritoneal dialysis and hemofiltration are not effective.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit outweighs potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown if linezolid is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
