Description
Overview of the medicine
Lubilax is a stimulant laxative containing Sodium Picosulfate, primarily used for the short-term treatment of constipation. It helps to stimulate bowel movements.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and adolescents over 12 years: 5-10 mg orally at night, usually with a glass of water. Do not exceed 10 mg per day.
Elderly
Start with the lowest effective dose (e.g., 5 mg) and adjust as needed.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is required in mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably at night, to produce a bowel movement the following morning. Swallow the tablet whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Sodium Picosulfate is a prodrug converted by colonic bacteria into an active compound (BHPM) that stimulates the enteric neurons, increasing peristalsis and promoting fluid accumulation in the colon, thereby facilitating bowel movement.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
6-12 hours after oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in feces; small amounts of glucuronides excreted renally.
Half life
Active metabolite (BHPM) has a half-life of 6-10 hours.
Absorption
Poorly absorbed systemically. Primarily acts locally in the colon after hydrolysis by bacteria.
Metabolism
Hydrolyzed by colonic bacteria to the active compound bis-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-pyridyl-2-methane (BHPM).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Intestinal obstruction or paralytic ileus
- Acute inflammatory bowel diseases (e.g., Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis)
- Severe dehydration
- Acute abdominal pain (e.g., appendicitis)
- Hypersensitivity to Sodium Picosulfate or any component
Drug Interactions
Antibiotics
May reduce the laxative effect by altering the colonic bacterial flora.
Diuretics and Adrenocorticosteroids
Concomitant use may increase the risk of electrolyte imbalance, especially hypokalemia.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include severe diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and significant fluid and electrolyte loss (especially hypokalemia). Management is symptomatic and supportive, including fluid and electrolyte replacement.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy is not recommended unless clearly necessary and under medical supervision. Small amounts of active metabolite may pass into breast milk, but adverse effects on the infant are unlikely with short-term use. Consult a doctor.
