Description
Overview of the medicine
Meropenem is a broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including severe and hospital-acquired infections. It is administered intravenously.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 500 mg to 1 g IV every 8 hours, depending on infection severity and type.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Reduced dosage required based on creatinine clearance.
How to Take
Administered intravenously over 15 to 30 minutes for infusion or 3 to 5 minutes for bolus injection.
Mechanism of Action
Meropenem works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell death. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) which are essential for bacterial cell wall formation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged by the kidneys (approximately 70% of the dose within 12 hours).
Half life
Approximately 1 hour in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and completely absorbed after intravenous administration. Oral absorption is poor.
Metabolism
Minimal hepatic metabolism, primarily hydrolyzed to an inactive metabolite.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to meropenem or other carbapenems
- •Severe hypersensitivity to other beta-lactam antibiotics
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Concomitant use with probenecid inhibits renal excretion of meropenem, increasing its plasma concentration and half-life.
Valproic Acid
Meropenem may reduce valproic acid levels, leading to loss of seizure control.
Storage
Store below 25°C, protect from light and moisture. Reconstituted solution should be used immediately or within a specific timeframe as per manufacturer's instructions.
Overdose
In case of overdose, discontinue Merocar and provide supportive treatment. Hemodialysis can be used to remove meropenem from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation.
