Description
Overview of the medicine
Micogyl 400 mg Tablet contains Metronidazole, an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication used to treat a variety of bacterial and parasitic infections. It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria and parasites.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 400 mg three times daily for 5-7 days depending on the infection. For amoebiasis: 400-800 mg three times daily for 5-10 days.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be considered in patients with severe hepatic impairment; generally, no specific dose adjustment required based on age alone.
Renal_impairment
No routine dosage adjustment needed for renal impairment, but caution with severe impairment. Hemodialysis removes metronidazole, so dose should be given after dialysis.
How to Take
Take orally with or after food to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not chew or crush.
Mechanism of Action
Metronidazole enters the cell of anaerobic bacteria and sensitive protozoa, where it is reduced by electron transport proteins. This reduction leads to the formation of short-lived nitroso free radicals which damage DNA, inhibiting nucleic acid synthesis and causing cell death.

Mainly renal (60-80%), some fecal (6-15%)
