Description
Overview of the medicine
Montene 10 mg Tablet contains Montelukast, a leukotriene receptor antagonist used for the prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma and for the relief of symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage

One 10 mg tablet once daily in the evening for asthma or allergic rhinitis.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment necessary.
Renal_impairment

How to Take
Orally, with or without food, preferably in the evening for asthma/allergic rhinitis. For exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, take at least 2 hours before exercise, and do not take another dose within 24 hours.
Mechanism of Action
Montelukast selectively antagonizes the CysLT1 receptor, preventing the action of leukotrienes (LTC4, LTD4, LTE4). Leukotrienes are potent inflammatory mediators released from various cells, including mast cells and eosinophils, and are involved in the pathophysiology of asthma and allergic rhinitis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 day for asthma and allergic rhinitis symptoms.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in feces via bile (approximately 86%), with less than 0.2% excreted in urine.
Half life
Approximately 2.7 to 5.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Mean oral bioavailability is 64%.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by CYP2C8, CYP3A4, and CYP2C9.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to montelukast or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Gemfibrozil
May increase the plasma concentration of montelukast due to CYP2C8 inhibition. Clinical monitoring recommended.
Phenobarbital
May decrease the AUC of montelukast by approximately 40%. Consider clinical monitoring.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In most reported overdose cases, no adverse events were observed. The most frequent adverse events were abdominal pain, somnolence, thirst, headache, vomiting, and psychomotor hyperactivity. Standard supportive measures should be employed.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Montelukast is excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
