Description
Overview of the medicine
Mox 125 mg Suspension is a penicillin-type antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 250-500 mg every 8 hours or 500-875 mg every 12 hours. For suspension, dosage should be calculated based on desired Amoxicillin amount.
Elderly
Same as adults, but monitoring of renal function is advised, and dose adjustment may be necessary in severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required based on creatinine clearance. Consult prescribing information for specific guidelines.
How to Take
For oral administration. Can be taken with or without food. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use a measuring spoon/cup for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Approximately 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily via the kidneys (50-70% as unchanged drug) within 6 hours.
Half life
1-1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized (approximately 10-25%) to inactive penicilloic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to penicillins, cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
- Infectious mononucleosis (may increase risk of skin rash).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Decreases renal tubular secretion of amoxicillin, leading to increased and prolonged plasma levels.
Allopurinol
May increase the incidence of skin rash, especially in patients with hyperuricemia.
Methotrexate
May decrease renal clearance of methotrexate, potentially increasing its toxicity.
Oral Contraceptives
May decrease the efficacy of oral contraceptives; advise additional contraception.
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May prolong prothrombin time (INR); monitor closely.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Once reconstituted, store the suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard any unused portion after 7-14 days (refer to product leaflet for exact duration).
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), electrolyte imbalance, and crystalluria. Management is symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis can be used to remove amoxicillin from circulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but adequate studies in pregnant women are lacking. Generally considered safe during lactation as only small amounts are excreted in breast milk.
