Description
Overview of the medicine
Mox 250 mg Capsule contains Amoxicillin, a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical dose is 250 mg to 500 mg every 8 hours, or 500 mg to 875 mg every 12 hours, depending on the severity and type of infection. Higher doses may be used for severe infections.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage; dose adjustment may be necessary in elderly patients with impaired renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required based on creatinine clearance. For creatinine clearance <30 mL/min, dosage intervals should be extended or doses reduced.
How to Take
Take orally, with or without food. Swallow the capsule whole with water. Do not crush or chew.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily renal; approximately 60-80% of an oral dose is excreted unchanged in the urine within 6 hours.
Half life
1 to 1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, with bioavailability of approximately 70-90%. Peak plasma concentrations occur within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; approximately 10-25% is metabolized to inactive penicilloic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, any other penicillin, or to any of the excipients.
- History of severe immediate hypersensitivity reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to another beta-lactam agent (e.g., cephalosporin, carbapenem or monobactam).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase the anticoagulant effect of warfarin and other oral anticoagulants, increasing the risk of bleeding. Monitor INR.
Probenecid
Reduces renal tubular secretion of amoxicillin, leading to increased and prolonged blood levels of amoxicillin. Concomitant use is not recommended unless specifically intended.
Methotrexate
May decrease the renal clearance of methotrexate, potentially increasing its toxicity. Monitor methotrexate levels.
Oral Contraceptives
Amoxicillin may reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives in some cases, though this is debated. Advise additional contraceptive methods.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and disturbances of fluid and electrolyte balance. In isolated cases, renal failure and convulsions have been reported. Management is symptomatic and supportive, including maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance and, if necessary, hemodialysis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown a risk to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Generally considered safe during pregnancy. Amoxicillin is excreted into breast milk in small amounts; generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but monitor for adverse effects in the infant (e.g., diarrhea, candidiasis, sensitization).

Lab Monitoring
- Periodic assessment of renal, hepatic, and hematopoietic function is advisable during prolonged therapy.
- Monitor for signs of superinfection.
Doctor Notes
- Prescribe based on local susceptibility patterns.
- Educate patients on the importance of completing the full course to prevent resistance.
- Be aware of potential drug interactions, especially with anticoagulants and methotrexate.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the entire course of medication, even if symptoms improve, to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.
- Do not save medication for future infections or share it with others.
- Contact your doctor if you experience severe diarrhea, rash, or any signs of an allergic reaction.
