Description
Overview of the medicine
Moxquin 0.5% Eye Drop contains Moxifloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, such as bacterial conjunctivitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill one drop in the affected eye(s) 3 times daily for 7 days. Do not exceed the prescribed duration.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is required for patients with renal impairment.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pouch, and instill the prescribed number of drops. Close eyes gently for a few seconds. Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Moxifloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to the disruption of bacterial DNA and cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action is relatively rapid, with antimicrobial effects observed shortly after administration.
Excretion
Systemic moxifloxacin is excreted primarily via feces and urine. With ophthalmic use, systemic excretion is negligible.
Half life
Systemic half-life is approximately 11-15 hours, but local ophthalmic concentrations are much higher and sustained at the site of infection.
Absorption
Following topical ophthalmic administration, moxifloxacin is minimally absorbed into the systemic circulation. Plasma concentrations are generally below the limit of quantification.
Metabolism
Systemic moxifloxacin is primarily metabolized in the liver. However, due to minimal systemic absorption from ophthalmic administration, hepatic metabolism is negligible for topical use.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin, other quinolones, or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Systemic absorption
Due to minimal systemic absorption, clinically significant drug-drug interactions are unlikely with ophthalmic moxifloxacin.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15°C-25°C). Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
An overdose of ophthalmic moxifloxacin is unlikely. If accidentally ingested, seek medical advice or contact a poison control center.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy or lactation only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or infant. Consult a healthcare professional before use.
