Description
Overview of the medicine
Mumox 250 mg capsule contains Amoxicillin, a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250-500 mg every 8 hours, or 500-875 mg every 12 hours, depending on the severity and type of infection. For severe infections, up to 1 gram every 8 hours.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment needed based solely on age; adjust based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance <30 mL/min, dose reduction or increased dosing interval may be necessary (e.g., 250 mg every 12 hours).
How to Take
Can be taken with or without food. Swallow the capsule whole with water. Do not chew or crush.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin is a bactericidal antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located in the bacterial cell wall, leading to inhibition of peptidoglycan synthesis and ultimately cell lysis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes to 1 hour (for antibacterial effect)
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys (50-70%) within 6-8 hours via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1-1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well-absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (about 70-90%). Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Minimal metabolism; approximately 10-25% is metabolized to inactive penicilloic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to penicillin or any other beta-lactam antibiotics.
- Infectious mononucleosis (may increase risk of rash).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, requiring INR monitoring.
Allopurinol
Increased incidence of rash, especially in patients with hyperuricemia.
Methotrexate
Reduced renal clearance of methotrexate, potentially increasing toxicity.
Oral contraceptives
May reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, advise additional contraceptive methods.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include gastrointestinal distress (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), electrolyte imbalance, and in rare cases, crystalluria or renal impairment. Treatment is largely symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis can be used to remove amoxicillin from circulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Generally considered safe during pregnancy. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but monitor infant for potential side effects (e.g., diarrhea, thrush).

WHO Essential Medicine
YesClinical Trials
Amoxicillin has undergone extensive clinical trials since its introduction. Current research focuses on its efficacy in various resistant strains and combination therapies.
Lab Monitoring
- Routine lab monitoring is not typically required. Liver and kidney function tests may be considered in patients on prolonged therapy or with pre-existing impairment.
Doctor Notes
- Counsel patients on completing the full course of antibiotics to minimize resistance.
- Be vigilant for signs of hypersensitivity, especially in patients with a history of penicillin allergy.
- Consider renal function when adjusting dosage, particularly in elderly or renally impaired patients.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the medicine for the full prescribed duration, even if symptoms improve, to prevent antibiotic resistance.
- Do not share this medication with others.
- Inform your doctor about any allergies, especially to penicillin.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.
Driving Precautions
Amoxicillin is generally not expected to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience dizziness or other side effects, avoid driving.
Lifestyle Advice
