Odacef 100 mg Suspension contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections, acute otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis, and uncomplicated gonorrhea.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and children over 12 years or weighing more than 50 kg: 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hours. (For Odacef 100 mg Suspension, dose should be calculated based on the equivalent mg/mL and administered accordingly).
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients unless there is severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with creatinine clearance < 60 mL/min. For creatinine clearance 21-60 mL/min, 75% of standard dose; for < 20 mL/min, 50% of standard dose.
How to Take
Odacef 100 mg Suspension is for oral administration. It can be taken with or without food. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use the provided measuring device for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, thereby interfering with the peptidoglycan synthesis.

Onset
Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 2-6 hours after oral administration.
Excretion
Approximately 50-60% of the absorbed dose is excreted unchanged in the urine over 24 hours.
Half life
Plasma elimination half-life is typically 3-4 hours, but can be prolonged in renal impairment.
Absorption
Oral bioavailability is 40-50%, absorption is not significantly affected by food.
Metabolism
Cefixime is largely excreted unchanged; there is no evidence of significant metabolism.

Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- Patients with a history of serious hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May increase cefixime plasma concentrations and prolong its elimination by inhibiting renal excretion.
Carbamazepine
Cefixime may increase plasma levels of carbamazepine when administered concomitantly.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
May increase prothrombin time (PT) or International Normalized Ratio (INR), leading to an increased risk of bleeding. Close monitoring is advised.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Reconstituted suspension should be stored in a refrigerator (2°-8°C) and used within 7-14 days. Do not freeze.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Treatment should be supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Cefixime should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother, as small amounts may be excreted in breast milk.
