Description
Overview of the medicine
Odafen-180 mg tablet contains Fexofenadine Hydrochloride, a non-drowsy antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis: 180 mg once daily. Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria: 180 mg once daily.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally needed for elderly patients with normal renal function.
Renal_impairment
For patients with impaired renal function (CrCl <80 mL/min), a reduced initial dose of 60 mg once daily is recommended. The 180 mg tablet may not be suitable for initial dosing in these patients.
How to Take
Take Odafen-180 mg tablet orally with water, usually once daily. It can be taken with or without food. Avoid taking it with fruit juices (e.g., grapefruit, orange, apple juice) as they can reduce the absorption of fexofenadine.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It works by blocking histamine from binding to H1 receptors, thereby preventing the symptoms associated with allergic reactions.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action is typically within 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in feces (approximately 80%) and urine (approximately 10%).
Half life
The elimination half-life is approximately 11-15 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached in 1-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; approximately 5% undergoes hepatic metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to fexofenadine, terfenadine, or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin and Ketoconazole
May increase fexofenadine plasma concentrations (due to inhibition of P-glycoprotein), but generally without clinical significance.
Antacids (containing aluminum or magnesium)
May reduce the absorption of fexofenadine. Separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive, focusing on standard measures to remove unabsorbed drug and provide supportive care.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Fexofenadine is excreted into breast milk; caution is advised when administered to a nursing woman.
