Overview of the medicine
Odafen 30 mg Suspension contains Fexofenadine Hydrochloride, a non-sedating antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically prescribed in this strength/form for adults. Consult a physician for appropriate adult dosage forms.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required, but use with caution in individuals with impaired renal function.
Renal_impairment
For adults with impaired renal function, a reduced initial dose of 30 mg once daily is recommended. For children with impaired renal function, consult a physician.
Children_2-5_years
15 mg (2.5 mL) twice daily.
Children_6-11_years
30 mg (5 mL) twice daily.
How to Take
For oral administration. Shake the bottle well before each use. Can be taken with or without food, but avoid taking with fruit juices.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine selectively antagonizes peripheral H1-histamine receptors, thereby inhibiting the effects of histamine and reducing allergic responses such as sneezing, watery eyes, and itching.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action typically occurs within 1 hour.
Excretion
Approximately 80% is excreted in feces and 10% in urine as unchanged drug.
Half life
The elimination half-life is approximately 11 to 15 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached in approximately 1-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; approximately 5% of the total dose is metabolized, primarily by the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to fexofenadine or any excipients in the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin and Ketoconazole
May increase plasma concentrations of fexofenadine. Monitor for increased side effects.
Antacids containing Aluminum or Magnesium
May decrease the absorption of fexofenadine. Administer at least 2 hours apart.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended. Hemodialysis does not effectively remove fexofenadine from the blood.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use in pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Fexofenadine is excreted in breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
