Overview of the medicine
Omastin 200 mg Capsule contains Omasfloxacin, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections including respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, and soft tissue infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
200 mg once daily for 5-10 days, depending on the infection severity and type.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is usually required unless severe renal impairment is present.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance <30 mL/min, dosage may need to be reduced to 100 mg once daily.
How to Take
Take the capsule orally with a full glass of water, with or without food. Do not chew or crush the capsule.
Mechanism of Action
Omasfloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes involved in DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.

Onset
Peak plasma concentrations reached within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in urine (60-70%) and feces.
Half life
Approximately 5-7 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; bioavailability is approximately 80-90%.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Omasfloxacin or other fluoroquinolones
- •History of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolone administration
- •Children and adolescents under 18 years of age (due to risk of arthropathy)
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance anticoagulant effects, increasing bleeding risk. Monitor INR closely.
Theophylline
May increase theophylline levels and toxicity. Monitor theophylline levels.
Iron or Zinc supplements
Reduce Omasfloxacin absorption. Take Omasfloxacin at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after these supplements.
Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium
Reduce Omasfloxacin absorption. Take Omasfloxacin at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after antacids.
NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs)
May increase the risk of CNS excitation and convulsions.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic treatment and supportive measures should be initiated. Gastric lavage may be considered. Maintain adequate hydration. Monitor ECG due to potential for QT prolongation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Not recommended during breastfeeding as Omasfloxacin is excreted in breast milk and may affect the infant.
