Description
Overview of the medicine
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Omeprol 40 mg injection is used for the treatment of various acid-related disorders when oral administration is not feasible.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 40 mg once daily by intravenous infusion for 20-30 minutes. In Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, the initial dose is 60 mg once daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required, but caution is advised.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is needed.
Hepatic_impairment
Dosage reduction may be considered for severe hepatic impairment.
How to Take
Reconstitute the vial with 100 mL of 0.9% NaCl solution or 5% Dextrose solution. Administer as an intravenous infusion over a period of 20-30 minutes.
Mechanism of Action
Omeprazole irreversibly blocks the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme system (the proton pump) in the gastric parietal cells, thereby inhibiting the final step of gastric acid secretion.

Excretion
Primarily via urine (approx. 80%) and feces (approx. 20%).
Half life
Approximately 0.5 to 1 hour (plasma), but effect lasts over 24 hours.

Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to omeprazole, substituted benzimidazoles, or any component of the formulation.

Increased and prolonged serum levels of methotrexate.

Increased plasma levels of these drugs due to inhibition of CYP2C19.
