Description
Overview of the medicine
Oxigel is a combination medication containing oxetacaine, aluminium hydroxide, and magnesium hydroxide. It is used to relieve symptoms of hyperacidity, heartburn, indigestion, gastritis, and peptic ulcers by neutralizing stomach acid and providing a local anesthetic effect on the gastric mucosa to reduce pain.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10-20 ml (2-4 teaspoonfuls) 3-4 times daily, 15 minutes before meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage. Use with caution in elderly patients with impaired renal function due to potential for magnesium accumulation.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustment may be required in severe renal impairment due to risk of hypermagnesemia.
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before use. Take orally, usually 15-30 minutes before meals and at bedtime. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Mechanism of Action
Aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide act as antacids by neutralizing hydrochloric acid in the stomach, reducing acidity. Oxetacaine is a potent local anesthetic that provides rapid and prolonged pain relief by blocking nerve impulses in the gastric mucosa.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action (within minutes) for both antacid and local anesthetic effects.
Excretion
Aluminium and magnesium are primarily excreted in feces. Minimally absorbed oxetacaine and its metabolites are excreted via kidneys.
Half life
Not significantly determined for the antacid components due to minimal absorption. Oxetacaine's systemic half-life is short if any absorption occurs.
Absorption
Aluminium and magnesium hydroxides are minimally absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Oxetacaine is also minimally absorbed orally, leading to local action with low systemic exposure.
Metabolism
Antacids are not metabolized. Minimally absorbed oxetacaine undergoes hepatic metabolism if it enters systemic circulation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
- Severe renal impairment.
- Patients with appendicitis or intestinal obstruction.
Drug Interactions
Ketoconazole, Itraconazole
Reduced absorption due to increased gastric pH. Administer at least 2 hours apart.
Tetracyclines, Fluoroquinolones, Iron salts, Digoxin
Reduced absorption due to chelation or altered gastric pH. Administer at least 2 hours apart.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and in severe cases with renal impairment, hypermagnesemia (muscle weakness, hypotension, bradycardia, CNS depression). Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage may be considered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation. Consult a doctor before use. Magnesium may cause diarrhea in breastfed infants.
