Description
Overview of the medicine
Povidex-10-W Solution contains Povidone-iodine, a broad-spectrum antiseptic used for skin and wound disinfection. It is effective against bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply undiluted or diluted solution (as directed by a healthcare professional) to the affected area. May be applied 1-3 times daily, or as needed for disinfection. Allow to dry.
Elderly
Same as adults, but caution should be exercised in patients with pre-existing thyroid conditions.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution, especially on large areas or broken skin, due to the risk of systemic iodine absorption and potential impact on thyroid function. Monitor thyroid function if extensive use is necessary.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply a sufficient amount of the solution to the affected skin or wound. May be applied directly or with a sterile swab/gauze. Allow the area to dry naturally. Do not bandage until dry. Do not ingest.
Mechanism of Action
Povidone-iodine releases free iodine slowly, which oxidizes microbial cellular components, rapidly killing bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and spores. This broad-spectrum microbicidal action is due to the non-specific oxidation of various cellular components.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, antiseptic action typically within seconds to minutes of application.
Excretion
Absorbed iodine is primarily excreted via the kidneys.
Half life
Not systemically relevant for typical topical use. When absorbed, iodine is rapidly cleared by the kidneys.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption from intact skin. Absorption increases significantly from large denuded areas, mucous membranes, or with prolonged use.
Metabolism
Absorbed iodine is not metabolized; the povidone polymer is not absorbed.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to iodine, povidone, or any component of the solution.
- •Thyroid disorders (e.g., hyperthyroidism, goiter), especially in repeated use or large areas.
- •Before and after radioiodine therapy.
- •In newborns and very young infants (up to 6 months of age) due to the risk of systemic iodine absorption and subsequent thyroid effects.
Drug Interactions
Hydrogen Peroxide
Concurrent use may result in mutual inactivation, reducing the efficacy of both agents.
Silver Sulfadiazine
Simultaneous application may cause inactivation of povidone-iodine and formation of insoluble complexes.
Other topical antiseptics (e.g., Octenidine, Chlorhexidine)
Avoid concomitant use as it may lead to incompatible reactions or reduced efficacy. Consult a healthcare professional.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Systemic iodine toxicity is rare with typical topical use but can occur with extensive application to large areas of broken skin, mucous membranes, or through ingestion. Symptoms may include gastrointestinal upset, metabolic acidosis, renal impairment, and thyroid dysfunction. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution and only if clearly needed. Systemic absorption of iodine may affect fetal or neonatal thyroid function. Avoid extensive use or application to large areas during pregnancy and lactation. Consult a doctor.
