Description
Overview of the medicine
Povidex-5-W Ointment is a broad-spectrum topical antiseptic containing povidone-iodine 5% w/w. It is used for preventing and treating infections in minor cuts, wounds, burns, and abrasions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply directly to the affected area once or twice daily, or as directed by a healthcare professional.
Elderly
No special dosage adjustment is required for the elderly; use as per adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required for topical application; caution advised if large areas are treated due to potential systemic absorption.
How to Take
For external use only. Clean the affected area thoroughly before applying the ointment. Apply a thin layer directly to the skin. May be covered with a sterile dressing if needed.
Mechanism of Action
Povidone-iodine works by releasing free iodine upon contact with the skin and mucous membranes. This free iodine acts as a broad-spectrum microbicide, oxidizing proteins and nucleic acids in microbial cells, leading to their death. It is effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action, typically within 15-30 seconds of application.
Excretion
Absorbed iodide is primarily excreted via the kidneys.
Half life
Not directly applicable for topical iodine unless significant systemic absorption occurs. Eliminated renally if absorbed.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin. Significant absorption can occur through large broken skin areas or mucous membranes.
Metabolism
Primarily acts locally. Any absorbed iodine is metabolized in the liver to iodide.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to povidone-iodine or any other component
- •Thyroid disorders (e.g., hyperthyroidism, goiter)
- •Before and after radioiodine therapy
- •In very low birth weight infants
Drug Interactions
Lithium
Concurrent use may lead to additive hypothyroid effects, especially if significant systemic absorption of iodine occurs.
Other topical antiseptics (e.g., hydrogen peroxide, silver sulfadiazine)
May reduce the efficacy of povidone-iodine due to chemical incompatibility.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Systemic toxicity (e.g., metabolic acidosis, hypernatremia, renal impairment, thyroid dysfunction) can occur with extensive or prolonged use on large areas of broken skin or mucous membranes. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy and lactation should be done with caution and only if clearly necessary, as iodine can cross the placenta and be excreted in breast milk, potentially affecting fetal/infant thyroid function. Consult a doctor.
