Description
Overview of the medicine
Povidex 6 W Cream is a topical antiseptic containing povidone-iodine, used for the prevention and treatment of skin infections in minor cuts, wounds, burns, and abrasions. It helps to kill bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microorganisms.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected skin area 1-3 times daily, or as directed by a physician. The treated area may be covered with a sterile dressing if necessary.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients, use as per adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is required for topical application in patients with renal impairment, but caution is advised with extensive or prolonged use due to potential iodine absorption.
How to Take
For external use only. Clean the affected area thoroughly before applying the cream. Apply a small amount of cream directly to the skin and spread gently.
Mechanism of Action
Povidone-iodine releases free iodine, which is a broad-spectrum microbicidal agent. It works by oxidizing microbial cell components, disrupting their metabolic pathways and structural proteins, leading to cell death. The povidone carrier allows for sustained release of iodine and reduces its irritating properties.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid microbicidal action within minutes of application.
Excretion
Primarily renal excretion of absorbed iodine and iodide.
Half life
Not applicable for topical use on intact skin; systemic half-life of absorbed iodine is short (hours to days) depending on thyroid status.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption when applied topically to intact skin. Absorption may be increased on broken skin or mucous membranes.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism of absorbed iodine; mainly utilized by the thyroid or excreted.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to iodine, povidone, or any other component of the cream
- •History of thyroid disorders (e.g., hyperthyroidism, goitre)
- •Before and after radioiodine therapy for thyroid conditions
- •In newborns and infants (especially premature infants) due to risk of systemic iodine absorption and thyroid suppression
- •Concomitant use with mercury-containing antiseptic preparations
Drug Interactions
Lithium
Concomitant use may lead to additive hypothyroid effects, especially with prolonged or extensive application.
Enzymatic wound cleaners
Povidone-iodine may reduce the proteolytic activity of enzymatic wound cleansers.
Other antiseptics (e.g., hydrogen peroxide, silver preparations, mercury-containing products)
May reduce the efficacy of povidone-iodine or form corrosive compounds (with mercury).
Storage
Store in a cool and dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause serious systemic effects on intact skin. Accidental ingestion or excessive application on large areas of broken skin or mucous membranes may lead to systemic iodine absorption, resulting in symptoms like gastrointestinal upset, metabolic acidosis, renal impairment, and thyroid dysfunction. Management involves symptomatic and supportive care.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation. Although systemic absorption is minimal, excessive or prolonged use may lead to fetal or infant thyroid dysfunction. Consult a doctor before use.
