Overview of the medicine
Prex-3 200 mg Capsule is a broad-spectrum antibiotic containing Prexacillin, used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
200 mg to 500 mg every 8 hours, depending on the severity of the infection. Maximum 4g/day.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is usually required unless there is significant renal impairment. Use lower end of adult dose range.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required. For creatinine clearance 10-30 mL/min, administer 200 mg every 12 hours. For <10 mL/min, administer 200 mg every 24 hours.
How to Take
Take orally, with or without food. It is recommended to take it with a glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Prexacillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.

Onset
Within 30-60 minutes after oral administration.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via the kidneys (glomerular filtration and tubular secretion).
Half life
Approximately 1-1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; bioavailability is approximately 70-80%.
Metabolism
Minimal hepatic metabolism; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Prexacillin or any other penicillin antibiotic.
- Known history of severe allergic reactions to other beta-lactam antibiotics (e.g., cephalosporins).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of Warfarin; monitor INR.
Probenecid
Increases and prolongs Prexacillin blood levels.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives; advise additional contraceptive methods.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and rarely, convulsions. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis may be useful in cases of severe overdose with renal impairment.

Pregnancy Category B. Generally considered safe during pregnancy. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation.
