Description
Overview of the medicine
Renafor-B 400 mcg Inhalation Capsule contains Budesonide, a corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation in the airways, preventing and controlling symptoms of asthma and COPD. It is designed for inhalation using a suitable device.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For asthma/COPD, typically 200-400 mcg twice daily, adjusted based on patient response. Max 800 mcg twice daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment generally required, but caution is advised.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment necessary.
How to Take
For oral inhalation only using a dry powder inhaler device. Do not swallow the capsule. Ensure proper inhaler technique.
Mechanism of Action
Budesonide is a potent glucocorticoid that exerts anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators and suppressing the migration of inflammatory cells to the airways. It acts locally in the lungs to reduce swelling and mucus production.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects typically observed within 24 hours, but maximum benefit may take 1-2 weeks.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in urine and feces as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 2-3 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the lung; systemic bioavailability is low due to extensive first-pass metabolism in the liver.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by CYP3A4 to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Acute bronchospasm (not for acute relief)
- Hypersensitivity to Budesonide or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Other Corticosteroids
Increased risk of systemic effects if used concurrently.
Ketoconazole, Itraconazole, Ritonavir
May increase systemic exposure to Budesonide due to CYP3A4 inhibition.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely to cause severe problems. Chronic overdose may lead to systemic corticosteroid effects like Cushing's syndrome and adrenal suppression. Treatment is supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Budesonide is excreted in breast milk; caution is advised during breastfeeding.
