Overview of the medicine
Doxofylline is a novel xanthine derivative used to treat bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It has bronchodilator activity and a better safety profile than traditional xanthines.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
400 mg twice daily (i.e., 20 ml of 100 mg/5 ml syrup twice daily).
Elderly
Reduced dosage or careful titration, 200 mg twice daily (i.e., 10 ml of 100 mg/5 ml syrup twice daily).
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment may be necessary. Administer with caution and monitor renal function.
How to Take
Oral, with or without food. Use the provided measuring cup for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Doxofylline acts as a bronchodilator primarily through adenosine receptor antagonism and phosphodiesterase inhibition. It helps to relax smooth muscles in the airways, making breathing easier.

Contraindications

Storage

Overdose
Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, headache, irritability, tachycardia, arrhythmias, seizures. Management: Symptomatic and supportive treatment. Gastric lavage, activated charcoal may be considered. Monitor vital signs and manage arrhythmias/seizures if they occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Category B. Use only if clearly needed and the benefits outweigh the potential risks. Lactation: Doxofylline is excreted in breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
