Description
Overview of the medicine
Rufast (Bilastine) is a second-generation, non-sedating H1-antihistamine used for the symptomatic treatment of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and urticaria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
20 mg once daily.
Elderly
No dose adjustment is required in elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is required in patients with renal impairment.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally, once daily, one hour before or two hours after food or fruit juice.
Mechanism of Action
Bilastine selectively binds to and antagonizes peripheral H1 histamine receptors, thereby preventing the effects of histamine such as vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, and itching.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in urine (33%) and feces (67%).
Half life
Approximately 14.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration; peak plasma concentration (Tmax) is reached in approximately 1.3 hours.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized in humans. It does not induce or inhibit CYP450 isoenzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.
Drug Interactions
Diltiazem
Co-administration with diltiazem (a P-gp inhibitor) significantly increases bilastine plasma levels. Use with caution.
Erythromycin
Co-administration with erythromycin (a P-gp inhibitor) significantly increases bilastine plasma levels. Use with caution.
Ketoconazole
Co-administration with ketoconazole (a P-gp inhibitor) significantly increases bilastine plasma levels. Use with caution.
Storage
Store below 30°C, in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Limited data on overdose. Symptoms may include dizziness, headache, and nausea. No specific antidote; symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus. It is not known whether bilastine is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
