Description
Overview of the medicine
Salbutal 2 mg tablet contains Salbutamol, a short-acting beta-2 agonist used to relieve bronchospasm in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It helps to open airways, making breathing easier.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usual starting dose is 2 mg or 4 mg three or four times daily. Maximum single dose is 8 mg. Maximum daily dose is 32 mg.
Elderly
A lower initial dose (e.g., 2 mg three or four times daily) may be considered, with careful titration based on response and tolerance.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised in severe impairment. Monitor for adverse effects.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with water, with or without food. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the bronchial smooth muscle, leading to relaxation of the smooth muscle and bronchodilation. This action increases airflow to the lungs.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Oral tablets typically show onset of action within 30 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine, with approximately 60-70% of a dose recovered within 24 hours as unchanged drug and its metabolite.
Half life
The plasma half-life of oral salbutamol is approximately 3.8 to 5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism in the liver to an inactive sulfate conjugate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any of the excipients.
- Not recommended for the management of threatened abortion.
Drug Interactions
Diuretics (e.g., Furosemide)
Concomitant use may enhance the risk of hypokalemia, especially at higher doses of salbutamol.
Beta-blockers (e.g., Propranolol)
May antagonize the bronchodilating effects of salbutamol and can precipitate severe bronchospasm in asthmatic patients.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) and Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)
May potentiate the cardiovascular effects of salbutamol; caution is advised.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include tachycardia, tremor, headache, dizziness, hypokalemia, and metabolic acidosis. Management is primarily supportive; severe hypokalemia requires potassium supplementation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is likely excreted in breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers and only if clinically indicated. Consult a doctor.

YesClinical Trials
Extensive clinical trials have confirmed the efficacy and safety of salbutamol in the symptomatic relief of asthma and COPD across various patient populations.
Lab Monitoring
- Monitor serum potassium levels, especially in patients receiving high doses, concurrent diuretics, or corticosteroids.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize that salbutamol is for symptom relief and not a substitute for maintenance therapy (e.g., inhaled corticosteroids) in persistent asthma.
- Advise patients to report increased frequency of use, as it may indicate worsening disease control.
- Monitor for cardiovascular adverse effects, especially in patients with pre-existing heart conditions.
Patient Guidelines
- Do not exceed the prescribed dose or frequency.
- Seek medical attention immediately if your symptoms worsen or if the medicine becomes less effective.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking.
- Do not stop taking this medicine without consulting your doctor.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Salbutamol may cause tremor or dizziness in some patients, which could affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. Exercise caution until you know how the medicine affects you.
Lifestyle Advice
- Avoid triggers that worsen your asthma or COPD (e.g., smoke, allergens).
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet, as advised by your doctor.
