Description
Overview of the medicine
Sanfix 200 mg capsule contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
200-400 mg once daily or in two divided doses for 7-14 days depending on the infection.
Elderly
Similar to adults, but dose adjustment may be necessary in case of severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Creatinine clearance 21-60 ml/min: 300 mg daily. Creatinine clearance less than 20 ml/min: 200 mg daily.
How to Take
Take orally, with or without food. For best results, take at the same time each day.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapidly absorbed, peak plasma concentrations typically occur within 2-6 hours.
Excretion
Approximately 50% of the absorbed dose is excreted unchanged in the urine over 24 hours. The remainder is excreted via non-renal mechanisms, possibly biliary.
Half life
Average plasma half-life is 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed, food may delay but not significantly reduce absorption.
Metabolism
Minimal hepatic metabolism; no active metabolites have been identified.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Cefixime or other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- Known hypersensitivity to penicillin antibiotics (due to potential cross-reactivity).
Drug Interactions
Nifedipine
May increase oral bioavailability of cefixime.
Carbamazepine
Concomitant use may increase cefixime plasma concentrations.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
May increase prothrombin time (PT) with or without clinical bleeding. Close monitoring of coagulation parameters is advised.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Supportive therapy should be administered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in small amounts in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.

- Coagulation parameters (e.g., PT/INR) if co-administered with anticoagulants
- Complete blood count (rarely, for prolonged use)
Doctor Notes
- Prior to initiating therapy, inquire about previous hypersensitivity reactions to cephalosporins, penicillins, or other drugs.
- Adjust dosage in patients with significant renal impairment.
