Description
Overview of the medicine
Seclo 20 mg Capsule contains Omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor used to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It treats conditions such as heartburn, acid reflux, and stomach ulcers.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 20 mg once daily, taken before a meal. For severe conditions, 40 mg once daily may be prescribed. H. pylori eradication requires specific combination therapy.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required for elderly patients, but caution should be exercised in severe hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is necessary for patients with impaired renal function.
How to Take
Take the capsule orally, preferably in the morning before breakfast. Swallow the capsule whole with water; do not chew or crush it.
Mechanism of Action
Omeprazole works by irreversibly binding to the H+/K+-ATPase pump (proton pump) in the parietal cells of the stomach. This inhibits the final step of acid production, thereby reducing gastric acid secretion.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Acid inhibition occurs within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in the urine (approximately 77%) as metabolites, with a smaller amount excreted in the feces.
Half life
Approximately 0.5-1 hour.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, but bioavailability is incomplete (30-40%) due to first-pass metabolism. Bioavailability increases to approximately 60% with repeated dosing.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYP2C19 and CYP3A4).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Omeprazole or any components of the formulation
- Concomitant use of Nelfinavir
