Description
Overview of the medicine
Silox 125 mg Suspension contains Simeticone, an anti-foaming agent used to relieve symptoms of excess gas in the digestive tract. It works by breaking down gas bubbles, making them easier to pass. It is commonly used for bloating, fullness, and discomfort caused by trapped gas.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
125-250 mg (1-2 spoonfuls of 125 mg/5 ml suspension) four times daily after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a physician. Do not exceed 500 mg in 24 hours without medical advice.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is needed as simeticone is not absorbed systemically.
How to Take
Silox Suspension is for oral administration. Shake the bottle well before each use. It can be taken directly or mixed with a small amount of water or other liquid. For infants, it can be added to the feeding bottle.
Mechanism of Action
Simeticone works by altering the surface tension of gas bubbles in the gastrointestinal tract, causing them to coalesce into larger bubbles that are easier to pass or absorb. It acts as an anti-foaming agent, reducing the amount of gas trapped in the stomach and intestines.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Relief of symptoms typically occurs within minutes to an hour after administration.
Excretion
Excreted unchanged in the feces.
Half life
Not applicable as it is not absorbed systemically.
Absorption
Simeticone is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract into the bloodstream.
Metabolism
Not metabolized in the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to simeticone or any component of the formulation.
- Suspected or known intestinal obstruction.
- Perforated or suspected perforated bowel.
Drug Interactions
Thyroid hormones (e.g., Levothyroxine)
Simeticone may interfere with the absorption of thyroid hormones if taken concomitantly. Administer these medications at separate times (at least 4 hours apart).
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C), protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Simeticone has very low toxicity due to its lack of systemic absorption. Overdose is unlikely to cause serious adverse effects. In case of accidental ingestion of very large amounts, seek medical advice if any unusual symptoms occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Simeticone is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation as it is not absorbed systemically. However, consult a healthcare professional before use.
