How to Take

Mechanism of Action
Risperidone acts as a potent antagonist at serotonin 5-HT2 and dopamine D2 receptors. It also antagonizes alpha1-adrenergic and H1-histaminergic receptors. Its antipsychotic activity is believed to be mediated through a combination of D2 and 5-HT2 antagonism.
Pharmacokinetics

Within 1-2 weeks for antipsychotic effect, though some effects may be seen earlier.
Excretion
Excreted primarily in urine (70%) and feces (14%) as risperidone and its metabolites.
Half life
Risperidone: approximately 3 hours; active metabolite (9-hydroxyrisperidone): approximately 21 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; peak plasma concentrations reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) to 9-hydroxyrisperidone, which is equally active. Also N-dealkylation.
