Description
Overview of the medicine
Sugel (Sucralfate) is an oral gastrointestinal medication used to treat and prevent ulcers in the stomach and intestines. It works by forming a protective barrier over the ulcer surface, shielding it from acid and enzymes.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 gram four times daily (one hour before meals and at bedtime) or 2 grams twice daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment needed, but monitor for side effects.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; consider lower doses as aluminum accumulation can occur in severe renal failure.
How to Take
Take on an empty stomach, typically one hour before meals and at bedtime. Do not chew or crush tablets; swallow whole with water. Shake suspension well before use.
Mechanism of Action
Sucralfate works by forming a viscous gel that adheres to ulcerated tissue, creating a protective barrier against acid, pepsin, and bile salts. It also stimulates prostaglandin synthesis and bicarbonate secretion, contributing to mucosal protection.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours for protective coating
Excretion
Excreted primarily unchanged in feces
Half life
Not applicable due to minimal absorption; eliminated rapidly
Absorption
Minimally absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (less than 5%)
Metabolism
Not metabolized
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Sucralfate or any components of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Antacids
Do not take antacids within 30 minutes of Sucralfate, as they may reduce its binding to the ulcer.
H2 Receptor Antagonists / PPIs
May reduce the efficacy of Sucralfate by altering gastric pH, take Sucralfate separately.
Tetracyclines, Fluoroquinolones, Digoxin, Phenytoin, Warfarin, Ketoconazole
Sucralfate may bind to these drugs, reducing their absorption. Administer Sucralfate at least 2 hours apart.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is rare due to minimal systemic absorption. Symptoms may include indigestion, nausea, vomiting. Treatment is supportive; gastric lavage may be considered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use with caution during lactation; excreted in breast milk in negligible amounts.

Lab Monitoring
- Monitor serum phosphate levels (in renal failure due to potential for hypophosphatemia).
- Monitor for aluminum toxicity in patients with chronic renal failure.
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients to maintain adequate hydration.
- Ensure patients understand the importance of timing doses relative to meals and other medications.
- Monitor renal function in elderly or renally impaired patients on long-term therapy.
Patient Guidelines
- Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Do not take other medications within 2 hours of taking Sucralfate unless advised by your doctor.
- Continue treatment for the full prescribed duration, even if symptoms improve.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking as they can worsen ulcers.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.
Driving Precautions
Sucralfate usually does not impair ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience dizziness or headache, avoid these activities.
Lifestyle Advice
- Avoid spicy, fatty, and acidic foods that can irritate the stomach.
