Description
Overview of the medicine
Taziaid 1 gm Injection is a broad-spectrum antibiotic combination of Ceftazidime, a third-generation cephalosporin, and Tazobactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. It is used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 gm to 2 gm Ceftazidime (with appropriate Tazobactam) IV/IM every 8-12 hours, depending on the severity of infection.
Elderly
Dosage may need to be reduced based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary based on creatinine clearance.
How to Take
Administered by slow intravenous (IV) injection over 3-5 minutes, intermittent IV infusion over 20-30 minutes, or deep intramuscular (IM) injection. Reconstitute the powder with sterile water for injection.
Mechanism of Action
Ceftazidime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death. Tazobactam irreversibly binds to and inactivates a wide range of bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes, thereby protecting Ceftazidime from hydrolysis and extending its antibacterial spectrum.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, typically within minutes for IV administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys via glomerular filtration.
Half life
Ceftazidime: approximately 1.8-2 hours; Tazobactam: approximately 0.7-1 hour.
Absorption
Administered parenterally (IV/IM), achieving rapid and high plasma concentrations.
Metabolism
Minimal metabolism for both drugs. Tazobactam is metabolized to an inactive metabolite.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ceftazidime, tazobactam, or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of severe hypersensitivity (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any other beta-lactam antibacterial agent (e.g., penicillins, carbapenems).
Drug Interactions
Loop diuretics
Increased risk of nephrotoxicity with aminoglycosides.
Aminoglycosides
Increased risk of nephrotoxicity.
Oral anticoagulants
May potentiate the anticoagulant effect.
Storage
Store below 25°C, protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include convulsions, encephalopathy, and neuromuscular excitability. Management involves supportive care, including hemodialysis to remove the drug.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk, caution advised during lactation.
