Description
Overview of the medicine
Fexofenadine is a non-sedating antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria in children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults typically use tablet forms. For suspension, dosage should be determined by a physician based on age and condition.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required in elderly patients with normal renal function.
Renal_impairment
For children 2-11 years with renal impairment, initial dose is 30 mg (5 mL) once daily.
Children_2_11_years
30 mg (5 mL) twice daily.
Children_6_months_to_under_2_years
15 mg (2.5 mL) twice daily for chronic idiopathic urticaria.
How to Take
For oral administration. Shake the bottle well before each use. Can be taken with or without food, but avoid taking with fruit juices.
Mechanism of Action
Selectively antagonizes peripheral H1-receptors, thereby inhibiting the effects of histamine and reducing allergic symptoms without causing significant drowsiness.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in feces (80%) and urine (10%).
Half life
Approximately 11-15 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached in approximately 1-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized in the liver (approximately 5% of total dose).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of the excipients.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin and Ketoconazole
May cause a small increase in fexofenadine plasma concentrations, but generally not considered clinically significant.
Antacids (aluminum and magnesium containing)
Co-administration with aluminum and magnesium containing antacids should be avoided as they can reduce fexofenadine absorption. Separate administration by about 2 hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive, including general measures to remove unabsorbed drug and monitor vital signs.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Fexofenadine is excreted into breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
