Description
Overview of the medicine
Tempol 120 mg Suspension contains Tempol, a synthetic nitroxide compound, primarily used for its potent antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties. It is designed to reduce oxidative stress and mitigate cellular damage in various conditions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
120 mg (5 ml) once or twice daily, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised. Start with lower dose.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dose adjustment may be necessary in severe renal impairment (e.g., 60 mg daily).
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before use. Administer orally using the provided measuring cup or spoon. May be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Tempol acts as a superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimetic and a broad-spectrum free radical scavenger. It catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radicals into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, thereby reducing oxidative stress. It also neutralizes other reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS).
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours of administration.
Excretion
Mainly renal excretion of metabolites and unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 2-4 hours.
Absorption
Readily absorbed orally, bioavailability may vary.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic metabolism, possibly reduction to hydroxylamine derivatives.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Tempol or any component of the suspension.
- Severe hepatic impairment.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May theoretically enhance anticoagulant effects. Monitor INR closely.
Immunosuppressants
Potential for reduced efficacy of immunosuppressants if used concurrently, due to antioxidant effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive measures should be initiated. There is no specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown whether Tempol is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
